EU4GreenGen / Gonzato: The Green Transition, a Priority for Albania’s EU Integration

At the “House of Europe” in Tirana, the EU’s “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for a Greener Albania” campaign was launched yesterday as part of the “EU4GreenGen” project. The event focused on climate issues and the need for businesses to become part of the green transition by adopting circular economy principles.

The Ambassador of the European Union to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, emphasized in his speech that “The green transition lies at the heart of Albania’s EU integration process. It is not optional for Albania, nor for any other country.” He added that this process is not just an accession requirement, but also an opportunity for sustainable economic growth, job creation, and protection of public health.

Gonzato stressed that safeguarding the environment and advancing the circular economy is a collective effort involving the government, businesses, media, civil society, and citizens. The EU, together with its member states such as Austria, Germany, France, and Sweden, is supporting Albania with funding, expertise, best practices, and strong partnerships to bring citizens closer to green initiatives.

“Protecting the environment, building a circular economy, and advancing climate action are shared responsibilities; a collective effort involving the government, civil society, businesses, the media, and the citizens themselves. The EU and its member states are supporting Albania every step of the way: with funding, expertise, best practices, strong partnerships, and by helping to inform and connect more closely with citizens,” said Ambassador Gonzato.

Deputy Minister of Environment, Elda Xhumari, highlighted the commitment and the need of the Albanian government to advance the green transition.

The “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for a Greener Albania” campaign is being launched as Albania advances negotiations on Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change, one of the most technically and financially demanding chapters, but also one of the most transformative.

As the country shifts from a linear model toward a circular and sustainable economic model, the campaign aims to inform businesses about their obligations and opportunities, promote EU green financing mechanisms, and encourage the private sector to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

From November 2025 to early 2026, a nationwide series of activities will take place, engaging government institutions, businesses, academia, and young people.
