Bytes&Books returns with the book ‘The Generation of Anxiety’.

After our previous meeting, where we discussed the book “Techno-feudalism – What Killed Capitalism?”, this time we will talk about another equally fascinating book! “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt is a powerful warning about the impact of phones and social media on children and young people.
The author explains that after 2013, depression and anxiety increased significantly — especially among girls — due to online pressure and social comparison. Haidt argues that childhood has shifted from real play to a “digital trap,” while parents often overprotect their children in the real world and protect them too little in the virtual one.
This has serious consequences, such as increases in self-harm, sleep problems, lower self-esteem, and social isolation. The book proposes concrete solutions such as setting age limits for social media, creating phone-free zones in schools, and bringing back free outdoor play.
At its core, it is a call for parents and society to rethink the relationship between the new generation and technology.
