The Second Edition of Climathon in Albania in Search of Solutions for Tirana’s Climate Challenges
26 October 2023 - 29 October 2023
A global community with a presence in several cities worldwide, and following a successful first edition, the Climathon movement returns for the second time to Tirana.
In an effort to inspire, connect, and support local change-makers who are determined to push forward the vision of a climate-responsible society, Climathon Tirana is hosting its second edition from October 26th to 29th, 2023, near the Palace of Congresses. This event is expected to feature many surprises and be integrated into the Albania Automotive Fair (AFA).
Founded by the European Commission and developed by EIT Climate-KIC, Climathon is an event organized in the form of a hackathon that highlights climate issues. EIT Climate-KIC is the largest public-private partnership addressing climate challenges through innovation by building a zero-carbon economy.
Organized by the Municipality of Tirana and the ICTSlab laboratory center within the framework of the second edition of the Automotive Fair in Albania, and with the support of SlovakAid, Climathon Tirana brings together people who want to change their local communities, decision-makers, and future leaders contributing to a zero-carbon future.
Through a strategic partnership, Climathon Tirana is supported by DPSHTRR, the Ministry of State for Entrepreneurship Protection, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, as well as Credins Bank and UNICEF.
Climathon events are entirely organized and planned by independent local organizers who share a common interest in addressing climate challenges. These actors serve as change catalysts in their communities by creating spaces for discussion, workshops, and initiatives to tackle climate change challenges.

The Challenges of Climathon Tirana
During a 48-hour marathon, participants will go through processes of understanding the challenges, team formation, brainstorming sessions, idea development, evaluation, and finally, presentation to the audience.
To promote action against climate challenges, Climathon follows three steps: defining climate challenges, developing solutions to address these climate challenges, and providing ongoing support for the implementation of these solutions.
1- Circular Economy to Combat Climate Change
Aims to develop solutions that promote the use of technology, innovation, and community collaboration to create a sustainable environment and climate based on the 5 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink. The circular economy involves preserving products and materials in use to recreate and rebuild to maximize value from a product’s life cycle.
2- Smart Mobility
Digital technologies in mobility are increasingly enabling smart solutions with a new transport mindset in urban areas and addressing issues in this sector by improving the quality of life in the city, reducing air pollution, saving time in transportation, and ensuring safer roads.
3- AI Technology for Green Entrepreneurship
This challenge aims to encourage applicants to use their innovative skills and AI technology to create sustainable solutions for businesses in Tirana, such as improving production and packaging processes, applying green technology in building and infrastructure design to reduce the environmental impact of businesses.
