There comes a moment when ambition alone is no longer enough. When the desire to make a difference needs real space to turn into action. This is exactly where LEAD Albania steps in — a program that, for more than a decade, has been building concrete bridges between young professionals and decision-making at the highest levels of public institutions in Albania.
Launched in Tirana in 2013, LEAD Albania has become one of the country’s most prestigious leadership development programs. Through a rigorous, transparent and highly competitive selection process, the program has built a strong network of alumni who today contribute to public institutions, international organizations and the private sector. Each year, the growing number of high-quality applications makes the selection process more challenging, further strengthening the program’s reputation for excellence and integrity.
LEAD Albania was created as a unique leadership development experience, offering young Albanian professionals direct exposure to how governance works at the highest levels. In 2018, the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) approved LEAD Albania Program II, officially known as the Leadership Experience and Development Program. Modeled after the White House Fellows Program in Washington, D.C., LEAD Albania aims to make a long-term contribution to the development of Albania’s future leaders.
Over the course of one year, selected fellows serve as advisors within key public institutions, including the Office of the President, the Prime Minister’s Office, line ministries, the Municipality of Tirana, and justice institutions such as the High Judicial Council, the High Prosecutorial Council, the Justice Appointment Council, the High Justice Inspectorate, and the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime. This first-hand experience allows fellows to understand decision-making processes from within and to actively contribute to policy development and implementation.
Alongside their institutional placement, fellows follow a continuous learning program with training sessions delivered by local and international experts. The educational component culminates in participation in an executive program at Harvard University in the United States. Another important part of the fellowship is the tailor-made leadership development program at the Center for Creative Leadership in Brussels. In line with Albania’s EU integration path, fellows also take part in a dedicated training program on European integration at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium.
Throughout the fellowship year, participants have the opportunity to meet prominent figures from national and international diplomacy, as well as political leaders and senior decision-makers. The program also includes a one-week study visit to Brussels, featuring meetings with representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission, offering fellows valuable insight into the functioning of European institutions.
LEAD Albania aims to nurture not only skilled professionals, but leaders with integrity, vision and a strong sense of public responsibility. For young people who are looking beyond personal career growth and want to have a meaningful impact on society, this call represents a concrete opportunity to turn ambition into action.
