In today's meeting of the Municipal Council, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, presented some of the projects that will be added to the capital, including the New Theater, the rehabilitation of the Botanic Garden, the new "Selman Stërmasi" Stadium, and the Museum of Tirana. He said that an official inauguration of the Pyramid will take place, which will be the largest center of innovation and digitalization technology, not only in Albania but in the entire region.
"We have several new city projects, and one of them is the new 'Selman Stërmasi' Stadium. Sports have not only made Tirana the European City of Sports, but in recent years, we have given an extraordinary boost.
Just look at the level of medals and the quality of athletes; it is evident that the funds invested by the Municipality of Tirana have been well spent. 90% of our Olympic team are from the Municipality of Tirana, from Sport Club Tirana. It is time to move from a building with travel agencies or electronic games to an asset for Tirana. It is time for Tirana to have a Museum of Modern Art; the National Gallery is under reconstruction.
We have conceived a space that is at the end of the New Boulevard, while the Museum of Tirana is conceived at Sarajet. We may have different opinions, but the law states that only the Institute of Monuments of Culture declares cultural monuments. We may have political opinions, we may have our debates, but either it is or it is not a cultural monument, it cannot be done by will and passion; it is by law and a commission. We also have Sarajet, where for the first time in the Municipality of Tirana, we have allocated a fund to buy these buildings, just as we did with the Kosova school, with the Libohovitëve buildings, and so we did with the Libohovitëve buildings. The Libohovitëve building will be transferred to the Ministry of Culture as an investment, which means we have no financial obligations. For Sarajet, it is the Municipality of Tirana that will make the investment," said Veliaj.
Meanwhile, he also added some other projects: "We want the Convention and Exhibition Center to be reflected in the budget as well. We held a competition, and Maksimiliano Fuksas was declared the winner. With so many events and activities happening here, the Palace of Congresses is now exhausted. We want the new Convention and Exhibition Center to be on the other side of Tirana, on the New Boulevard.
We are in a judicial process that is coming to an end for the Botanic Garden. I believe that the evidence of what we can do and the potential of the Botanic Garden, beyond political beliefs, is just 100 meters away from the Zoo, from a zoo where lions used to eat potatoes and wolves were depressed on those cement slabs, whereas today we are in an educational space where we also have classes for children, underground parking for the community, and new species that we did not have before. We are waiting for the finalization of that process.
The "Asllan Rusi" Hand Games Stadium is a building from the time of Italy; it used to be an aircraft hangar. The proposal we have is to intervene there as well and turn it into a true basketball and volleyball arena, as befits a European city like Tirana."
