With the theme “Environment and the Green Transition,” the Hackathon will be held simultaneously in 10 European countries, including Albania. This is an exciting opportunity for students, coders, programmers, entrepreneurs, and environmentally-driven professionals to collaborate and transform their ideas into innovative solutions through EU space technologies.

To participate in the Hackathon, you need to bring an idea to address one of the following challenges:

  1. Monitoring and Reporting Carbon Emissions
  2. Optimizing Services and Planning for Sustainable Living
  3. Predicting and Mitigating Climate Change

1 – Monitoring and Reporting Carbon Emissions

Carbon emissions reporting and tracking are crucial, especially in Europe, as they enable companies to effectively monitor and manage their carbon emissions, promoting sustainability. Participants will be able to use #EUSpaceData to envision a greener future by improving the detection, monitoring, and reporting of carbon emissions.

Ideas could be based on:

  • Detecting Carbon Credit Fraud: Identify abuses related to carbon emissions by companies and/or develop solutions to increase transparency.
  • Monitoring Human-Caused Emissions: Propose innovative ways to measure greenhouse gases in the atmosphere produced by human activities.
  • Reporting and Certifications: Help private companies assess their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies and outcomes.
  • Any other idea that addresses this challenge.

2 – Optimizing Services and Planning for Sustainable Living

Through EU satellite data, signals from Copernicus and Galileo, or future services using IRIS2, residents can stay informed about variables important to their quality of life, while companies serving these citizens can improve their services and collaboration with local authorities.

Ideas could be based on:

  • Green City Indicators from EBRD: Provide data on air, water, and soil quality, their usage, transportation, energy, waste management, etc.
  • Optimizing Services: New services for companies providing electricity, gas, heating, water, sewage, waste management, etc.
  • Supporting Policy Design: Innovative tools for regional and municipal authorities to manage better.
  • Any other idea that addresses this challenge.

3 – Predicting and Mitigating Climate Change

Climate change is a reality faced by every country in the world. However, by using satellite data, the impact of these problems can be mitigated.

Ideas could be based on:

  • Monitoring Sea Level and Coastal Erosion: Enable proactive measures to protect the coast and the people/companies living near it.
  • Resilience of Communities and Habitats: Build capacities to effectively respond to unexpected challenges caused by climate change phenomena.
  • Preventing Climate-Related Issues: Develop forecasting tools that can avoid or reduce the cost of solving problems caused by climate change.
  • Any other idea that addresses this challenge.

The Big Ideas Campaign will offer central and local sessions for participants and those interested in learning more about the Hackathon and the technologies that will be used: Big Ideas Campaign
